GWA
The General Weight Average(GWA) is a numerical measure of a student's academic performance, commonly used in the Philippines. It combines the grades and course units into a single average that reflects the overall performance of a student throughout a specific semester, year or academic term.
The GWA is calculated using the formula below:
Formula:
It is calculated by multiplying each subject or course grade by its corresponding number of units, adding the products (weighted grades), and then dividing it by the sum of total number of units taken.
Example:
| Subject/Course | Grade | Units |
|---|---|---|
| Subject 1 | 1.75 | 3 |
| Subject 2 | 2.50 | 2 |
| Subject 3 | 1.25 | 3 |
| Subject 4 | 1.50 | 3 |
| Subject 5 | 1.00 | 3 |
Subject 1 - 1.75 x 3 = 5.25
Subject 1 - 2.50 x 2 = 5.00
Subject 1 - 1.25 x 3 = 3.75
Subject 1 - 1.50 x 3 = 4.50
Subject 1 - 1.00 x 3 = 3.00
3 + 2 + 3 + 3 + 3 = 14 (total units)
15.75 + 5 + 3.75 + 4.50 + 3 = 21.50 (total weighted grades)
21.50 ÷ 14 = 1.54
So, the GWA is approximately
1.54.
